This is an amazing satellite loop of Super Typhoon Meranti tracking toward southern Taiwan, with the eye passing just south of Taiwan’s southern tip. Meranti is now headed for the northern Philippines & southeast China.
As of late Tuesday afternoon (9/13/16), Super Typhoon Meranti had become the strongest storm on Earth so far in 2016, with sustained winds of 190 mph, and gusts to 230 mph. Meranti appears to be one of the strongest storms on record (certainly with respect to wind, but its final minimum central pressure will also be a ranking factor). We will await future data and additional information from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.
